Required Part to Reverse Dryer Door on Maxima 7000 and 6000 Series, November 30, 2011

We have a stacked Maytag Maxima 6000 series washer and dryer. The doors open opposite directions (the washer is hinged on the left and the dryer on the right). When the two are side by side, that is a smart way to open the doors – washer on the left, dryer on the right, open both doors and clothes can be passed from washer to dryer easily.

Ah, but when they are stacked, that arrangement is a pain. Well, unlike refrigerators, Maytag made this hinge a little complicated to switch. This “kit” is required.

This “kit” is a single piece of plastic trim that fits inside the door, between the outer and inner trim piece. Yes, it’s an expensive piece of plastic and seems all wrong to have to buy that, but that’s the design.

The trim piece comes with step by step instructions in English and French. Two tools are required, a #2 Philips head screw driver and a T25 Torx screw driver. While waiting for this part to ship, it’s a good idea to get the T25 Torx screw driver – they are easy to find now. Any length will work fine – they recommend an 8 inch version, but any size will do. I used a small rechargeable driver with a Torx bit and a cordless drill with the Philips bit for disassembly.

There are only a few minor tricks to the switch. It took me about 15 minutes to do the job, start to finish. The first scary part was removing the 4 Torx screws that hold the door hinge – there is a hooked tab that holds up the door once the screws are removed (no need to have an assistant hold the door). After that it’s really straight forward removing the Philips head screws. Pay attention to removing only Philips head screws (the instructions said 17, I only had 14 on my door). There are some smaller Torx screws that are not removed. To remove the inner door trim, there is a sort of tab arrangement at the top and bottom, a little persuasion with my hand released one of the tabs, then the panel separated easily. All the rest is really simple. The trim piece from this “kit” replaces the trim piece already installed on the door.

Now my wife is super happy, both doors swing the same direction and it is much easier to transfer laundry from the washer to the dryer.

Amazon is definitely the best place to buy these air filters for the Whirlpool refrigerator. Initially, I went back to the place where I bought the refrigerator to pick up a replacement water and air filter, but about croaked when I saw the prices. Later that day, I checked prices on Amazon, and they were less than half the store retail price, so I bought on Amazon.

My ***** (5) star rating is for the prices at Amazon. In the refrigerator, I’m not convinced that these air filters really do much. My belt and pully broke after 11 years on my Whirlpool. One of them broke, and it took the other with it. I knew absolutely nothing about dryer internals. Just search on the web, and you will find plenty of videos. The hardest part of the install was taking off and putting on those little triangles that hold on the wheels. Once I gave up on treating them delicately, they went off and on easily. I think it would be very difficult to break one, so just take charge. After doing my research, I figured the roller wheels were just not spinning freely, so I tried polishing the spindles. After putting it back together, the noise had decreased some, but not enough for my liking. I then ordered this product after learning my dryer came from the factory with just a belt tensioner "pad" and not the wheel (factory cost cutting?). I also felt the new rollers would be quieter. I took everything apart again and was able to install fairly quickly for a non-dryer-tech (1-2 hours). The wheel tensioner was definitely more difficult to work with than the pad, mostly b/c it is simply bigger. Getting the belt back on the motor took a little more time/patience, but the dryer is back to being "factory quiet". The vendor was prompt with my order and included all the expected components & instructions. It IS the power cord, but it’s still missing the 3/8 inch 90 degree elbow with NPT external pipe threads and the 3/8 inch flexible braided water supply line. This is larger than the standard 1/2 inch! You will not be able to use an old one. If you don’t have an air vent, you’ll also have to purchase one.

This really works. We had really strong food smells in our fridge (for example, putting anything meaty or garlicky in it would result in a blast of unpleasant odor when we opened the door) that 5 boxes of baking soda and any number of other purported odor absorbers could not touch. This little box got rid of all the smells overnight, and has kept them away for months. Highly recommend!
